As odd as it may seem, working in a super quiet place is not the best for boosting your productivity and creativity. Likewise, a loud environment is also not a good thing for getting stuff done. And science says that ambient noise is the perfect catalyst for a creative and productive burst.
If you’re anything like me, then you just read that and had a thought something like “yeah, right” because you prefer quiet when working. But, it is hard to argue with science and the Journal of Consumer Research, among other notable publications, has done a study on this exact thing.
And if you’re the type who like to read science write-ups, then view the results here. And for everyone else, here are the important takeaways:
- a moderate (70 dB) level of ambient noise enhances performance on creative tasks more than a low (50 dB) level of ambient noise
- a high level of noise (85 dB) hurts creativity
Free Ambient Noise App for Creativity Boosts
So, you can head out in search of an environment with the perfect noise level, or you can create it at your desk for free. The Coffitivity website lets your brain enjoy the hum of a coffee shop without ever leaving your desk.
Personally, I find this better than going to an actual coffee shop since my luck always seem to result in an abnormally loud group of friends sitting right beside me and having a loud conversation. You can also get Coffitivity as an app for your phone or your computer, which is great for those long flights when you want to get something done.
More Of The Best Ambient Noise Apps
If you want to mix up your ambient noise apps, then you will find a lot of different options to choose from in the app stores. Of course, some of those are better than others. While I am a big fan of the Coffitivity app, there are some others that I also enjoy and the people over at Fast Company seem to agree with me.
This is an older one, but still one of the best that you can get. What I love about this ambient noise app is that you can listen to pretty much any imaginable noise. The app is available for your phone, your tablet or your computer.
The cost of the app is just $2.99, but there is a free version called Ambiance Lite that is available for the iPhone. If you try it out for free, then there is a good chance that you will want to upgrade to the paid version to unlock all the sounds.
If you love the sound of rain, then you have GOT to check out the Thunderspace app. I have tried out many different apps and websites that have rain sounds and this one is hands down my favorite.
The sound quality on this one is so much better than anything else out there. If you want to get a little preview of just how great it sounds, then put on some headphones and visit the Thunderspace website and play the free audio or just watch the Thnderspace video below.
Ambient Cafe Sounds on YouTube
Of course, you do not have to buy or download anything to find some creativity boosting ambient sounds. All you have to do is look on YouTube or your favorite video sharing site to see what is available. Personally, I am a big fan of the cafe sounds in the video below. It is a two hour video, which is great for working because two hours is the perfect time for working and then taking a break.
Give it a listen for yourself…
